about

“The Lord descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up.”

January 1st 2015 at six o clock was when we rolled into a inconspicuous driveway ridden with potholes that we’ve already passed once in Woodstock, New York. In a daze we search for anything telling us that this was our stop in our truck and trailer crammed with music equipment, a weeks worth of cheap food, and a book or two. Hidden in the shadows of the Catskill mountains you’d never know it was there. Back in Mississippi the only shadow on those flatlands was your own. The sun had faded away behind them until all that was seen was caught only by our hi beams. As we neared the barn, holding inside of it a world class studio, a lone figure in black walked across the drive in front of us. The figured approached the driver side window knocking the glass with his welder gloves. “You’re a long way from the Mason Dixon, huh?”

We’d left Egypt and was now at Sinai in upstate New York.

There we were given 6 day crash course of commandments we needed to be a band. We lived in the shadows of the mountains and tried tracing the steps of our heroes that had walked the hallowed ground there before us, people who wrote the soundtrack of our discovery of music in our youth. With the guiding hand of one of our music heroes, Simone Felice, we learned what made HGES strong, weak, and special.

We shook a bucket of broken glass and hit garbage can lids in the dark candlelit barn as the snow fell during “Colored Black”. We shook ourselves and instruments as Simone danced like a ancient shaman and maestro’d the band into chaos in “John The Revelator”. We cried as the final breath was let go on “Neverending Saga”. We wrecked ourselves on these songs and let the songs wreck themselves when needed. We broke bread and made new friends. This EP that you’re hearing is a group discovering who they are and what they will be. It is our Sinai in the lonesome wilderness of chasing music.

Canaan is on the horizon.
